Pacific Council of AIDS Service Organisations (APCASO)
The Asia Pacific Council of AIDS Service Organisations (APCASO) is a network of
non-governmental and community-based organisations that provide HIV/AIDS services
within the Asia Pacific region. APCASO is part of the International Council of
AIDS Service Organisations (ICASO). APCASOs Mission Statement
APCASO promotes the responses of non-governmental community-based AIDS organisations
to the global challenge of HIV/AIDS, with particular emphasis on strengthening
the response in communities with few resources and within affected communities.
APCASOs Structure To facilitate working together globally,
APCASO initiated a process within the ICASO framework whereby ICASO is the interactive
focal point which links five regions and ensures that concerns and interests of
CBOs and NGOs around the world are articulated and represented at the global level.
At the regional level, APCASO has national focal points (NFPs), key organisations
involved in HIV/AIDS issues in their respective countries which facilitate national
networking and communication. Drawing from the national focal points, the Council
of Representatives (COR) or Board of Directors is formed. The COR helps facilitate
the strengthening of local organisations in their own countries and sub-regions,
as well as encouraging sub-regional action in response to priority/urgent issues.
The COR is composed of one or two key NFPs representing the five sub-regions:
East Asia, South Asia, Southeast Asia, Pacific Island Nations, and Australia/New
Zealand. There are two people representatives of people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA)
in the COR. Linking the NFPs, COR and other regional / global networks
and organisations is the Regional Secretariat (RS). The RS is the inter-active
focal co-ordination point of APCASO and provides overall programme co-ordination,
monitoring, and administrative support for network activities. It develops, implements
and monitors a variety of projects aimed at strengthening the community response
in the region. The RS is currently located in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
