Asia Pacific Rainbow (APR)

The Asia Pacific Rainbow (APR) started as an e-mail-list following a meeting of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender delegates at the 5th International Congress on AIDS in Asia-Pacific (ICAAP) in 1999 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The previous ICAAPs in New Delhi, Chiangmai and Manila hosted a few gatherings which were instrumental in bringing people together to share experiences, discuss issues and plan some actions around sexuality and gender-related issues.

Since its inception, the list has grown many folds, and serves the purpose of ensuring that lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transgender, intersex, queers and supporters (LBGTIQ+) in the Asia Pacific region stay connected. During the 6th ICAAP in Melbourne, Australia in October 2001, list-members and those who were interested in APR came together for the first General Assembly. It was the consensus that AP R shall be a network of LBGTIQ+ organisations and individuals in the Asia Pacific region. Since the General Assembly, APR has moved forward in its direction by holding its first Strategic Planning Workshop in Manila, Philippines in June 2002.

Vision

APR envisions a world that recognises and honours cultural, sexual and gender diversity and respects the basic rights of every member of society.

Mission

APR is a network committed to:
1. Improving the quality of life for LGBTIQ+ in Asia and the Pacific

2. Strengthening and mobilising LGBTIQ+ communities in the region
to respond to their needs and concerns, including HIV/AIDS
    issues; and

3. Raising awareness on and promoting acceptance of gender and
    sexual diversity
