Notice 6/2005 AIDS Society of Asia and the Pacific
(ASAP) Update of Activities for Period ending 30 June 2005

15 September 2005

1. Ongoing Restructuring of ASAP
ASAP issued an invitation to organisations to lodge applications to become organisational members. An increasing number of applications from organisations were received throughout June leading up to the ICAAP in July.
2. Meeting of Executive Committee of ASAP
Preparations were made for a formal meeting of the ExCo during the 7th ICAAP in Kobe, Japan in July 2005.
3. Re-establishment of a Secretariat
A bank account and formal mailing address was identified with the Seven Sisters Secretariat in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The Secretariat is co-located with the Malaysian AIDS Council and fellow Sister organisation APCASO.
4. Development of longer-term strategy for ASAP
Professor John Dwyer of University of NSW was confirmed as the Public Officer of ASAP as required by legislation administered by the Department of Fair Trading in NSW, Australia. Registration of the new Public Officer was completed.
5. Strengthening of future ICAAPs
ASAP continued to monitor progress made toward the 7th ICAAP in Kobe in July 2005. The Sri Lankan Health Minister formerly wrote to ASAP inviting Colombo to be selected as the host of the 8th ICAAP scheduled for 2008.
6. Work toward strengthening relations with IAS
Final arrangements were made for representatives of ASAP and IAS to meet in July during 7th ICAAP to agree on next steps in developing the relationship and to strengthen arrangements at the international conference level.
7. Strengthen work in the area of women, gender and HIV/AIDS
There remains a need to build linkages with women throughout the Asia and Pacific regions to promote equality and reduce vulnerability to HIV by ensuring their voices are heard by key leaders. The Working Group expects to report back to ExCo during their next meeting in July 2005.
8. Continue the development of a network of social scientists throughout the Asia Pacific region focused on HIV/AIDS.
ASAP has committed to a process of creating such a network with UNESCO. ASAP has been identified by UNESCO as a partner in a forthcoming Regional Workshop re-named to “Setting a Social Research Agenda on Trafficking and HIV/AIDS”. A representative of ASAP will attend the UNESCO workshop.
9. Consultation with 7 Sisters Forum
ASAP continued to publish its activities on its shared Seven Sister’s Website. In addition, ASAP participated in the 7Sisters annual meeting in Bangkok in April.
