Notice 1/2006 AIDS Society of Asia and the Pacific (ASAP) Update of Activities for Period ending 30 June 2005
13 January 2006

This note provides an update of ASAP’s activities in the calendar quarter indicated.

1. Ongoing Restructuring of ASAP
ASAP appointed a new Executive Committee following an election process with independent overseeing group supported by UNAIDS. ASAP received a large number of applications from organisations seeking to become organisational members. A Selection Committee was established and twenty-four eligible applicant organisations were invited to become members: 4 from Australia and Pacific, 4 from NE Asia, 5 from SE Asia and 11 from South Asia. Of the 24 new organisational members, 9 representatives were appointed to the ExCo. In addition, a representative from UNAIDS was also appointed.

2. Meetings of Executive Committee of ASAP
The former ExCo formally met during the 7th ICAAP in Kobe, Japan and, as a ‘care-taker’ ExCo agreed upon the following 6-month plan of action:
i) review and selection of current new organisational members; (completed)
ii) undertake voting for new ExCo; (completed)
iii) follow-up on unresolved funding matters; (ongoing) and,
iv) commence preparations for supporting ICAAP in Sri Lanka. (A visit was undertaken by Ms Marina Mahathir to Colombo to begin to guide the formation of LOC and IAC)
The new ExCo agreed to meet in February 2006.

3. Re-establishment of a Secretariat
Further discussions are expected at the next ExCo meeting.

4. Development of longer-term strategy for ASAP
This will be a matter for discussion at future ExCo meetings.

5. Strengthening of future ICAAPs
ASAP continued to consult with the 7th ICAAP LOC following the successful Congress in Kobe in July 2005. The Sri Lankan Health Minister formerly wrote to ASAP inviting Colombo to be selected as the host of the 8th ICAAP scheduled for 2007. As reported under point 2 iv) above, ASAP continued to monitor progress made toward the 8th ICAAP scheduled for Colombo in 2007.

6. Work toward strengthening relations with IAS
ASAP and IAS met in July during 7th ICAAP and agreed on developing the relationship further. IAS provided ASAP with a small amount of funding to help develop the relationship further and support future collaboration.

7. Strengthen work in the area of women, gender and HIV/AIDS
For discussion at future ExCo meeting.

8. Continue the development of a network of social scientists throughout the Asia Pacific region focused on HIV/AIDS.
ASAP has committed to a process of creating such a network with UNESCO. ASAP participated as a partner in a UNESCO Regional Workshop “Setting a Social Research Agenda on Trafficking and HIV/AIDS”. This will be a matter for discussion at future ExCo meetings.

9. Consultation with 7 Sisters Forum
ASAP continued to publish its activities on its shared Seven Sister’s Website. ASAP has requested that the Secretariat strengthen its collaborative efforts with the other sisters. ASAP provided further input to the ‘internal evaluation’ by way of submitting a completed evaluation sheet and met with consultant from Australia/AusAID.
