Notice
4/2005 of the AIDS Society of Asian and the Pacific Statement
on New Membership to the AIDS Society of Asia and the
Pacific
17
June 2005
In
response to a large number of applications for membership
of ASAP, this notice seeks to clarify the new organisational-membership
arrangements of the AIDS Society of Asia and the Pacific
(ASAP). It should assist organisations to better understand
the criteria for membership laid down in ASAP’s
Rules.
Which Organisations Should Become Members of ASAP?
ASAP seeks to link peak HIV/AIDS bodies, national AIDS
organisations, together with research institutions and
regional NGOs throughout the Asia-Pacific. Importantly,
the new membership arrangements are designed to enable
the creation of necessary new linkages between a broad
range of civil society actors working in HIV/AIDS but
which previously appear to have fallen between, or are
not represented by, other regional networks, in particular
those included within the 7 Sisters Coalition. Indeed,
where organisations other than national organisations
seek to join ASAP, we may find it necessary to ask for
reasons as to why applicants believe current peak national
bodies are not open to them and hence a more appropriate
alternative.
What Criteria will be used in Determining an Organisation’s
Suitability?
ASAP is bound by its Rules that state:
Eligible organisations
In order for an organisation to become a Member of ASAP,
the organisation must:
either be:
|
|
an
non-government organisation, a community based organisation
(regardless of local, national, regional or global
reach) or a research institution or other similar
organisation; or |
| |
an
organisation whose mission, aims and objectives
are determined by the Executive Committee to be
consistent with those of ASAP; and |
| |
if
requested by the Executive Committee, provide evidence
of the work and activities of the organisation which
are consistent with those of ASAP; and |
| |
originate
from any country in Asia or the Pacific Islands;
and |
| |
pay
the Membership Fees by the due date as determined
by the Executive Committee from time to time. |
We
would like to stress however that, whilst ASAP may invite
applicants to provide further supporting information,
given ASAP’s limited resources, each applicant is
responsible to provide sufficient information in their
application.
Thank You for Considering ASAP
We hope that this notice further clarifies ASAP’s
new arrangements. We will review each application on its
merits but guided by the Rules and our desire to prioritise
the linking of peak HIV/AIDS bodies, national AIDS organisations,
together with research institutions and regional NGOs
throughout the Asia-Pacific.
