Notice 5/2005 AIDS Society of Asia and the Pacific(ASAP)
First Round of Invitations to New Organisational Members Complete

31 August 2005

The AIDS Society of Asia and the Pacific (ASAP) wishes to thank all those organisations that lodged an application for organisational membership. Such support means that ASAP can continue to strengthen its work, especially as it relates to the International Congress on AIDS in Asia and the Pacific (ICAAP).

What We Have Done
ASAP would like to explain its processes and reasons for selecting new organisational members.

ASAP has received a large number of applications. In order to achieve our mission we have prioritised peak HIV/AIDS bodies, national AIDS organisations, together with research institutions and regional NGOs whose capacity appears to most closely reflect ASAP’s aims and objectives. In addition, we recognise that ASAP’s current logistical limitations make administering a larger membership pool unrealistic.

Hence, to ensure that ASAP is best serving all HIV/AIDS communities and groups within the Asia Pacific, it has established a First Round selection process that:

prioritises applicants whose capacity most closely meets ASAP’s aims and objectives; and,
recommends a review of applications by the newly appointed Executive Committee in 2006.

Please note that all membership applications are being retained and new applications are being reviewed. Letters to organisations not invited in the First Round are being despatched explaining the reasons for our decision.

What We Will Do
A new Executive Committee will be established soon. Once established, it will be recommended that it review both existing membership applications and our procedure for inviting organisations to join.

Thank You for Considering ASAP
We hope that all applicants understand the need for ASAP to adopt a focussed approach. We also hope that this Notice helps to further clarify ASAP’s new arrangements. We will continue to review each application on its merits but guided by the Rules and the need to prioritise linkages between the organisations mentioned.
