Joint Statement between ASAP and UNAIDS

(Colombo, 19 January 2007) The AIDS Society of Asia and the Pacific (ASAP) and UNAIDS have met today in Colombo, Sri Lanka as members of the International Advisory Committee (IAC) to the 8 th International Congress on AIDS in Asia and the Pacific (ICAAP) which is scheduled to be held in Colombo between 19-23 August 2007.

The purpose of the visit was to review preparations towards the ICAAP. ASAP and UNAIDS met with various members of the Local Organising Committee and the Government including the Minister of Health and Nutrition, the Honourable Nimal Siripala de Silva. Discussions covered logistical and programmatic preparations including concern around the current security situation.

The Minister confirmed the host Government’s full support for the ICAAP including security provisions in the lead-up to and throughout the Congress. ASAP and UNAIDS encourage potential delegates to continue registering for the Congress and invite organisations intending to participate and sponsor sessions to also commit their support.

ASAP and UNAIDS take this opportunity to congratulate the Local Organising Committee on the progress made with preparations towards the Congress and reaffirm our full support. We all look forward to a successful ICAAP in Colombo from 19-23 August 2007.
